I was awaken last night by 2 freaked-out women, Denette and Jessica, around 10:45pm. Someone was shot and lying in the driveway across the street. The neighbour was on the phone calling 911 when Jessica was on her way out and overheard the drama unfolding. Needless-to-say she came back in the house a little rattled, told her mother what was going-on and I was awaken in-turn.
There’s little anyone can “do” other than watch during these things. I stepped out the front door just as the police arrived. Not much I could then, other than ask questions and get in the way, so I opted to watch.
The area we live-in is called Pine Hills – not-so jokingly referred to as Crime Hills. Popping noises (firecrackers we hope – but pretty sure there’s gunfire in there too) are not uncommon and neither is the sound of sirens. Shortly after 10:30, Denette and Jessica tell me they heard a popping noise, and thought little of it.
Of course, since the incident, we wondered what happened. Did a neighbour stumble across a would-be robber, was it a home invasion, or just a random act of violence?
Turns-out the guy was participating in a home burglary one street behind my across-the-street neighbour’s house. The person living at the house caught the crooks as he arrived home. From what I hear, he thought he saw one of the crooks point a gun in his direction. So he did what anyone would do and returned the favour with several shots. One crook today is dead, the other… though “critically wounded” made it over several fences just to “drop” in the driveway across the street. I’m under the impression one or more got away.
I was relieved to hear the news story this morning. Not sure why I felt relief, but I did. Nice to hear that Karma works for crooks too. Both bastards got what they deserved! If any of the crooks did get away, I hope they reconsider the life-of-crime they’ve participated in. Or, find another home with another guy who can shoot straight and get lined-up in his/her sights!

BTW: There was a 3rd crook. Apparently he was also shot. Though he made it to the hospital on his own, the hospital was obligated to report all gunshot wounds. Needless-to-say, he was busted too.
